  67.   time. In this case you should close the module and open it again.

  70.   and your picture will not look right. In this case you should
  71.   resize the window a bit. This will cause a redraw of the graphic.

  73. * If you are loading an TIF picture and get a black window, then
  74.   this picture is of a TIF type that ArtEffect does not support.
  75.   If you have a TIF datatype you can use this one instead of the
  76.   internal loader, but you have to remove the file TIFF.pss from

  87. When you received AE from the Internet (WWW) the installation is
  88. simple as can be. Unpack the archive AE.LHA with LHA or another
  89. suitable program.  A drawer named  "ArtEffect.Demo" is created
  90. automatically.

  92. If the BGUI.library does not yet exist in your LIBS: directory you
  93. must copy it to this location. You will find it in the drawer LIBS.
  94.  
  95. Before starting the program an ASSIGN is required. This can be
  96. executed by double-clicking the ASSIGN icon or by entering the
  97. following command to your user-startup file.
  98.

  101. Please keep in mind that AE requires the following system:

  103. - AmigaOS 3.0

  142. The word "DEMO" is always written into the image using the foreground
  143. colour. When this happens, there will be a delay during which you
  144. will not be able to use the program.

  146. Keep in mind that, as the word "DEMO" is always written in the same
  147. colour the change will not always be apparent, making it seem as if
  148. the program has stopped working. This is simply the delay mentioned
  149. above, and the program will become operable again in a few seconds!

  159. - Before the starting ArtEffect, the command

  163.   must be executed. If that is not done in your user-startup
  164.   sequence you must do it now by clicking on the icon

  168. - Now double click on the icon to start ArtEffect. The startup
  169.   dialogue will appear and the Plug-Ins are loaded. After a short
  170.   while the GUI is loaded too.

  172. - A click will close the startup dialog and ArtEffect is ready

  175. - Try opening a picture now and have a look at ArtEffect's exciting

  208. productive user interface. We emphasise on productive functions
  209. which are quick and simple to use in your daily work. However not
  210. only beginners will like it but also the professionals who are
  211. looking for high quality and who want to get the job done quickly
  212. and efficiently.

  214. ArtEffect is not "just another" graphics program for the Amiga.
  215. ArtEffect is not oriented towards the current "standard" programs
  216. on the Amiga, but rather to the classic programs for professional
  217. image processing such as Photoshop (TM) and for creative painting
  218. like Fractal Painter (TM).

  220. Proven concepts and ideas of these classic products were merged with
  221. the uncontested advantages of the Amiga. You see the result before
  222. you. Naturally these are only advertising statements if they are not
  223. supported by facts. Here then is the demo version of ArtEffect, which
  224. giving you an opportunity to convince yourself of the advantages.

  228. Professional Image Processing with ArtEffect
  230.  
  231. Processing scanned images and graphics of all kind has been the
  232. Amiga's domain ever since the machine appeared. Nevertheless the
  233. products available for the Amiga have not been widely recognised by
  234. the graphics world during recent years.
  235. ArtEffect is the first program to provide productive image processing
  236. functions under a uniform and effective user interface in the typical
  237. Amiga style.

  241. Selection Functions
  243.  
  244. Particularly important are the functions to select certain areas of
  245. an image for processing. Of course some filters are often applied to
  246. the entire image, but when dealing with image errors it is necessary
  247. to select a particular area. So one can retouch a scanned photo in a
  248. narrow area without influencing the quality of the rest of the
  249. picture.

  251. ArtEffect offers a wide range of selection functions (they are also
  252. known as mask functions) such as: rectangle, circle, freehand and
  253. specialities like colour selection, running masks and "Magic Wand"
  254. (selection of connected areas with similar colour). With this all
  255. cases of selections of certain areas can be done quickly and easily.

  259. More than 30 Effects

  262. ArtEffect offers more than 30 different effects with countless
  263. options. All effects are used the same way and they all have the same
  264. user interface. Each effect has e.g. a Preview in which the effect is
  265. applied to an image section. The range can be zoomed in and out. A
  266. progress bar shows the progress of the operation. The options are
  267. very extensive so every effect can be adapted to your personal wishes.

  335. Natural Painting with ArtEffect

  338. While most of the paint programs will only be able to paint in full
  339. colour with full intensity and density, "natural painting" means to
  340. simulate natural drawing tools like paintbrush, crayon, airbrush,
  341. chalk, coal, oil colour.
  342.

  347. To do a good job on simulating all these drawing tools ArtEffect
  348. offers many controls for mode, opacity, intensity, density, roughness,
  349. form etc. All values are freely adjustable. With it the transparent
  350. colour of a water colour brush looks very realistic and also harsh
  351. chalk can be simulated excellently.

  354. Painting on different materials
  356. ArtEffect still goes one step further and even offers simulation of
  357. different materials. You can paint on canvas, wood, stone, marble etc.

  361. Attributes of Painting Tools
  363. The properties of the three basic tools stencil, brush, airbrush
  364. can be redefined completely. Form, intensity, density, roughness,
  365. transparency, opacity, pressure sensitivity (only on graphic trays)
  366. and Fade Out can be adjusted freely. With all these properties,
  367. natural drawing tools can be simulated very well and without any
  368. fringes.

  370. The properties of the tools are stored in the brush manager. Image
  371. sections (brushes) which are needed more often may be stored here
  372. as well.

  376. Strong Effects of ArtEffect
  379. Perfect Retouch of Images
  381. Scanned pictures often have scratches, specks of dust or similar
  382. distorsions. With Median filter one can remove these automatically,
  383. but the image will however loose its sharpness. It is better to
  384. retouch only the respective area. The tools "Smear" and "Smooth",
  385. but also "Lighten" and "Darken" are used often and with pleasure.
  386. These tools only work in the area coverd by their tip and so they
  387. can be used with great precision.
  388.  
  389. Other effects like "hue", "saturation" and "luminance" may also be
  390. used this way.
  391.

  394. Endless Possibilities with Masks
  396.  
  397. Masks are one of the most productive functions of ArtEffect.
  398. Therefore we have provided several possibilities of defining them.
  399. Thus masks are also selections and masking is the same as selecting.
  400.  
  401. 1. Rectangle Masking: The fastest masking function is the masking of
  402.    rectangles.
  403.  
  404. 2. "Magic Wand": This is certainly the most powerful function for
  405.    masking. One click with the Magic Wand will select/mask all
  406.    connected pixels of the same colour.
  407.  
  408. 3. Colour Selection: With it all pixels of the same colour anywhere
  409.    in the whole picture are selected.
  410.  
  411. 4. Stencil Masking: The stencil option also has a mask mode, allowing
  412.    you to work with very fine details.
  413.  
  414. A very special thing are running masks. These are masks that get
  415. increasingly permeable (oblique). It can be used for sophisticated
  416. effects.

  420. The many Extras of ArtEffect
  422.  
  423. - ArtEffect is a pure 24-bit art package. All operations and
  424.   manipulations will always be carried out in the highest possible
  425.   quality.
  426.  
  427. - All functions of ArtEffect are very fast. Some time-critical
  428.   filters are even optimised for higher processors.
  429.  
  430. - ArtEffect can display multiple Views of the same picture.
  431.  
  432. - A special light table allows pictures to be overlayed.
  433.  
  434. - A special perspective tool supports the creation of perspective
  435.   drawings.
  436.  
  437. - The pantograph lets you copy one part of a picture to another
  438.   place of the same one or to another picture. Many effects can
  439.   be used by this operation.

  441. - Further important features are: Zoom, Pipette (for colour
  442.   selection), lasso (for freeform selections), colour interpolator,
  443.   undo function.
  444.  
  445. - ArtEffect offers many loaders/savers (IFF, JPEG, TIFF, GIF,
  446.   PNG, BMP) but also the Amiga datatypes and the new 24-Bit datatype.
  447.  
  448. - ArtEffect offers an efficient 24-bit printer driver that uses the
  449.   standard Workbench drivers. There is additional support for the
  450.   printer enhancers TurboPrint and Studio.
  451.  
  452. - ArtEffect supports the graphic tray Wacom ArtPad II (a special
  453.   driver is needed!). With the graphic tray all drawing modes become
  454.   pressure sensitive. This is very important for natural drawing.

  456. - ArtEffect can be extended externally by a flexible Plug-In
  457.   interface. With it 3rd party companies can offer new functions.
  458.   There is also a special GUI for these Plug-Ins, so programming
  459.   them is very easy.

  466. Operation of ArtEffect is very intuitive. This was a primary design
  467. goal for this product. The GUI is a very important part, because if
  468. it is not good, you will not be able to use the full power of the
  469. program.

  471. ArtEffect uses a unique GUI for all its parts. Different managers
  472. help you to control the different options. They can stay open so
  473. they show you the tool's current status.
  474.  
  475. Because of the well thought-out user interface most of the functions
  476. of ArtEffect can be used without having to look into the manual. The
  477. positions of all windows and managers are stored and show up next
  478. time you start the program.
